CSE deeply concerned about Civic freedoms in Turkey

On the eve of the High Level dialogue with Turkey, Civil Society Europe sent a letter to the  High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy expressing its concerns about the recurring human rights violations in Turkey and the closing of civic space culminating with recent detention of human rights defenders and journalists.

CSE calls on Ms Mogherini  to send during the High Level Political Dialogue with Turkey an unambiguous message that human rights are a key and non-negotiable priority in the EU’s engagement with Turkey, whilst remaining convinced that there can be a European path for Turkey.

However without a decision to drop charges against human rights defenders and journalists detained and a re-opening of civic freedoms, European pre-accession talks should be suspended together with pre-accession funding.
