Last 19 October the European Economic and Social Committee adopted an own-initiative opinion presented by Jean-Marc Roirant (Various interests – GR III / France), President of Civil Society Europe.
The opinion stresses that an engaged, pluralist and independent civil society plays a crucial role in promoting active public participation in the democratic process, in governance, accountability, and transparency at EU and national level. In order to foster and maintain this role, adequate public funding must be put in place, together with an political and legal framework at European and national level. The EESC presents 26 concrete recommendations to ensure better civil dialogue and access to funding, including for the ongoing review of the EU financial rules and for the post-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework. The EESC calls also in its report for the establishment of an EU Coordinator on civic space freedoms and of a European fund for democracy, human rights and values within the EU. The opinion has been adopted with 118 votes in favour, 15 against and 10 abstentions. More information can be found here.
