With the rise of authoritarianism and constant change in geopolitical alliances taking place, Europe must prioritise international cooperation while ceasing to rely on outsourcing aspects of its security. This begs the important question, what approach should be used?
Our statement on the democracy shield outlines our stance – that a human-centred approach to security must be implemented. This approach is one that must protect people’s well-being, and must include protection of democratic structures, a crucial element in fighting any authoritarian attempts to obtain power.
A thriving civil society is a crucial component in building a healthy democratic society. Even in heavily polarised societies, civil society provides services that enhance societal cooperation, fight against against institutional abuses and violations of fundamental rights, and provides avenues to amplify the voices of underrepresented groups, acting as a bridge between citizens and institutions. We must enable the protection of civil society and promote a strong, predictable funding environment for civil society organisations (CSOs), while implementing safeguards to empower them to fulfil their missions.
We see the democracy shield as an opportunity for the EU to secure, safeguard and promote its democratic infrastructure. Read the full statement here.
