EU citizenship rights include democratic participation

12 October 202013 February 2023 EU_CSO_2024Civil Dialogue, Press releaseTagged Citizenship, civic participation, covid-19, european union, freedom of movement, right to information

Civil Society Europe has contributed to the European Commission’s consultation on European Citizenship.

In line with our previous response, we have highlighted that the EU citizenship report should also encompass citizen’s rights linked to the participation in the democratic life of the Union as highlighted in articles 10 and 11 of the Treaties, and calling for the adoption of an interinstitutional agreement on civil dialogue. Rights to participation has also particularly been challenged during the pandemic crisis.

We have also highlighted challenges in exercising freedom of movement, voting rights and consular protection, notably for persons facing discrimination and exclusion, and we are calling for improving knowledge of these rights and of redress measures available to citizens.
